20 Great 3-Column Drupal Themes
October 4, 2007 - 7:58 am PDT - by Stan Schroeder 30 Comments
After our recent overview of 2-column themes for Drupal, it’s now time to switch to almost equally popular 3-column themes, which give the user a lot more maneuver space. We’ve chosen 20 fine themes for you; hope you’ll enjoy them.
LiteJazz - a versatile theme with several collapsible sections. It works great as a 3-column theme, although it can be converted to other formats.

Burnt - simplicity, lots of white space, low contrast. Fixed width 3-column layout.

FriendsElectric - clean and simple 880 px wide theme, available in three different colors - green, blue and red.

Art4Blue - a very usable theme, easy on the eyes.

Ability - a standard 3-column theme (it also works in 2-column mode) with a nice header and footer.

Danger4k - a professional looking theme; a great starting point for a corporate website.

My Drupal classic - another fine theme from the MyDrupal theme; header is available in 3 different colors, just replace the name of the header image.

BlueBreeze - light blue and grey tones on this one soothe the eyes and mind, although the overall look might be considered too generic by some.

Andreas09 - the ubiquitous Andreas09 port for Drupal. For those who like it simple, blue, and grey.

MultiFlex - one of the rare colorful themes in this bunch is actually quite versatile and usable.

Aurora - Black, dark blue and fiery orange dominate this theme, which isn’t really what one would expect given the theme name. However, the colors work quite well together.

Amadou - a different take on a 3-column theme, with both sidebars on the right side.

Eugene8 - contrary to Amadou, Eugene8 sports both sidebars on the left side.

News Portal - the title pretty much describes the intended use of this theme - clear presentation of content, neat and tidy design: perfect for a news site.

Aquasoft - I guess no decent collection of themes & skins can pass without a Mac-related theme.

SEO position - another theme with two sidebars on the right, but this one is much more compact.

Siberia - just like LiteJazz, this is not really a 3-column theme - it’s a theme with 12 collapsible regions which can - if you want it to - be a 3-column theme. Either way, it’s really functional.

Teleology - the image might make it seem a bit empty, but fill up those sidebars and it becomes much nicer.

Gunmetal - for those who like it dark, Gunmetal is a good choice. The theme is fluid width, which means the content will expand and contract depending on the window size.

Nifty Corners - I’m not sure about that header image, but the rest of the theme works quite well together.

Yeesh, no offense but if these are the best you could find, the Drupal community needs to get some better designers involved. Compare any of these to many of the Wordpress themes and they just look terribly stale.
LiteJazz and Aurora are the only ones that look remotely creative from a design perspective in my opinion. Functionally, Eugene8 is surpasses most of the rest, though it’s not really an eye-catcher.

Brooke - I think Drupal just suffers from a smaller installed user base than WordPress. I also have found that Drupal users tend to be tinkerers more than the WordPress folks. They like to get in to the nitty gritty and design their sites from the ground up.
The Drupal folks are very much a DIY crowd.

Yeah, I think the Wordpress folks are targeting the end user, while the Drupal folks are targeting the webmaster.

Beware - many of these use poorly written XHTML/CSS. Validate first to be safe.

Good advice. This is true of any template that you download from the web - make sure that whatever template you’re using validates!

I don’t know if you guys heard but there are rumors/talks of the fact that Drupal is going to have new functions that easily integrate with WordPress and Facebook. If this happens, and they do a good job of it, I think we can see the userbase grow substantially and hopefully then we’ll have some real good drupal plugins and themes.

Drupal don’t need WordPress Modules, nor it needs templates.
Indeed Drupal is powerful system, and often very misunderstood, so it’s difficult to read good informations. IBM and more recently Adobe choosed Drupal as their tool of choice and it’s not a surprise when you carefully study this product and his near competitors.
First Drupal is not a blog tools, or CMS but rather a framework. You have a decent API, you can program all custom fields you can imagine, powerful taxonomy, thousand of modules, granularity access, ecommerce, jQuery engine in the core and… the choice of several powerful templates engines. So with Drupal you can do big web sites, multi-blog sites, newspaper sites, social web sites and so on…
The biggest problem with Drupal is its non sexy look in the back office and its cumbersome organisation and also in the template library. The official Drupal web site seems to be very dated in terme of graphics look too.
But I prefer to have a powerfull web framework, able to handle all kinds of web 2.0 and templates complexity, rather than CMS who offer fancy look but are very limited in term of power. In fact you can make very nice templates, it’s just a artistic question. You have all the power and much more to do that.
Ok there is a learning curve, but this is because web 2.0 sites are complex things. And Drupal has the best ratio on the market between power/accesibility.
For now the lacks of good Drupal templates commes more from the designer community who don’t really know the existence ans the powerful features of Drupal. Also PHPTemplate is little intimidated even if you know CSS. Things will be more easy with Drupal 6 and the ability to use more pure CSS templates.
In one word the future of Drupal is brillant. And thank you Mashable.com for this post, even if the list of templates are not so fancy, and even if people are sometimes not able to do the maths.

Wow! Clo75 thanks for that lesson. You definitely taught me a thing or two. I definitely laughed when I read this though, “The biggest problem with Drupal is…” then you mention 4 rather large problems. haha.

Hi,
We contributed another 3 column theme to Drupal months back. I’m surprised it wasn’t added to the list above, but it’s the same theme we use on:
http://www.seoposition.com
We are also launching a theme site which will compete (designed-wise) with many Joomla template sites.
One of the problems with Drupal is the murky GPL licensing issues. Unlike Joomla and WordPress, Drupal has a lot more undefined areas that would allow for more freedom from those who want to create, contribute, and mainly sell Drupal themes. Hopefully this will change soon.

man clo75 those are the awesome sites gr8 man.

The thumbnail for the SEO Position theme is out of date, the new version I built for Drupal 5 is a lot nicer. You can check it out on my Drupal Themes page: http://blamcast.net/drupal-themes

The New copy blogger theme from http://mydrupal.com is also a very good addition to this list.
Also NewFangled theme is very good.

While it is fairly easy to do Drupal theme CSS validation , it is not so straight forward to validate XHTML.
CSS is usually static and content independent, which is main idea with style sheet. What you need to do is to pass it to CSS validator and get your answer.
XHTML is generated and the structure depends on site configuration and content. It happens that turning on or off some Drupal feature makes site W3C compliant or non-compliant. User defined content also can (and often does) make page XHTML non-compliant.
In practice, you can determine when Drupal theme is breaking W3C XHTML standard, but if it is compliant, it is very hard to prove.

Half of these themes are fairly ugly, you’ll find better looking ones if you browse some sites that are less restricting in the license on the design. (cc2.5 vs GPL).

Some of the themes are pretty dull. Themers can mix and match templates to override, or even just start throwing CSS on top of the existing HTML to get a variety of really nifty designs.

This is really kind of a depressing state of affairs. Say what you want about Drupal, powerful, extensible, whatever. If it looks bad in presentation, then what else really matters. And from all I’ve seen, Drupal is about as first generation as templates can get. I’d be embarrassed to be part of this project, after looking at all the outstanding template work done with Wordpress and Joomla. The Drupal people better put up or shut up. Designers for Wordpress and Joomla are making Drupal look like something for kindergardeners. Who cares if you have a Ferrari engine inside your tricycle.

Great post, really cool themes. Here is my list of top 5 themes.
